In this context, «information model» is used as an acronym for «information system», which means an information system that collects, stores, and processes architecture, design, technology, economic, and other information about an object.
The main components that characterize building information modeling and determine its further success are the correct definition of these interrelations, as well as accurate classification, well-thought-out and organized structuring, relevance and reliability of the data used, convenient and efficient tools for accessing and working with the available information, the possibility of transferring this information or the results of its analysis for further use in external systems.
The ability to work with the entire model using any of its types, especially plans, facades and sections, is one of the main advantages of information modeling.
- Building Information Modeling does not replace traditional design methods, but is an evolution of them, so it logically incorporates them;
- In contrast to the classical approach, the work with plane projections is accessible and familiar, so that for many people it is a comfortable way, but not the only way, to work with the model;
- Working with plane projections is no longer «just drawing» or «geometric» in the new design method. Plane projections take on the role of «window» through which we view the model;
- The heap of drawings and documents (which before were called designs) becomes just one of their forms of expression. By the way, the information model instead of the classical set of paper documents has already been accepted by some professional organizations, such as «Moscow State Examination».
On closer inspection, it is easy to see that with the Building Information Modeling approach, the fundamental design decisions remain in human hands, and the «computer» again performs only the technical function assigned to it, namely the storage, processing, output or transmission of information.
However, it also differs from previous design methods in that it is not possible for a single person to deal with the growing volume of engineering tasks that the computer can carry out in the ever-shrinking amount of time available for design.
